“How do I become the Pack Leader?” is one of the most frequent questions I get asked.
You need to convince your dog that you are the person in charge.
The pack leader is the decision maker who decides - where you should go on your walk, how you should behave in different situations and how to respond to all the strange and unfamiliar things that are out there.
Once you understand how dog packs work you soon see the importance of the pack leader and understand that the pack leader makes all the decisions.
You can't leave it up to your dog because there's always the chance that your dog will get it wrong and make a big mistake!
You need to understand that the following means nothing to a dog in order to become the pack leader….
They don't care what car you drive, how much money you earn, what language you speak! or the size of the house they live in...
Understand that your dog would happily swap all of that for a nice snack!
Being a pack leader is more than just asking your dog to sit before they eat their dinner!
Lastly - Using physical strength to train your dog or trying to dominate your dog is certainly not the way to become the pack leader in fact this can back fire badly on you later on if you teach your dog that physical strength is what it is all about. You may be able to force your dog into submission, however, this will not convince your dog that you are worthy of being the pack leader... the only thing that this kind of training will do is convince your dog that you are a bully.

Being a real pack leader means that your dog should be able to relax and switch off completely when inside the house.
If your dog is nearly always on guard and unable to relax then he is performing the duty of a pack leader! And he'll be a very anxious dog.
Your dog should be able to relax switch off, but that is directly connected to how you meet and greet your dog after your return home.
You'll notice the subtle difference when you see it on video, between being the pack leader or the follower.
Lastly, Feed time... There is a lot more to feeding your dog correctly that will establish who is the pack leader than just asking your dog to sit!
